Children were summoned in groups of ten from the "pox base" waiting room and secretaries looked up the patient's prior entry in the "Abundant Aid Record." An appraiser inspected the vaccination site and noted the result in the "Abundant Aid Record." Children deemed suitable to serve as "pox bases" were brought back to the "pox base" waiting room and the vaccinators were notified of their names. Children not suitable to serve as "pox bases"--for example because they were otherwise ill or the pocks on their arms had ruptured--were sent home and a note was made about it in the record. In the case of children who had developed "spurious pocks" or an otherwise problematic response, vaccinators provided their caregivers with a ticket for a follow-up appointment to revaccinate.
