Children were brought in from the collective waiting room in groups of ten, and an appraiser (kanteikata) examined them one by one and determined the number of incisions. He also prescribed steam or massage treatment to prepare the skin for vaccination if necessary. Three secretaries were stationed in this room: one to write down the number of incisions and the patient number into the child's portable chart; one to write this information onto an erasable board for the secretary in the vaccination room; and one to prepare the information for inscription into the permanent patient record ("Abundant Aid Record"). An instructor (fureikata) handed the caregiver a leaflet about aftercare at home and a card with the follow-up appointment before sending the child back to the collective waiting room.
