The Vaccination Clinic in Fukui
The centerpiece of Fukui domain’s vaccination program was the clinic in the castle town, first located at Kasahara Ryōsaku's own house and later in a building provided by the domain. This pathway explores Fukui's vaccination clinic as both a built environment and a site of centralization that brought together people and resources. Because vaccination was a strictly sequential process, the spatial layout channeled the movements of both doctors and children (who were being led by their caregivers) so that their bodies would be at the same place at exactly the right time.
This pathway draws on research by Ban Isoshiro, Umihara Ryō, and Yanagisawa Fumiko.
