Space and Time at the Vaccination Clinic

The centerpiece of Fukui domain’s vaccination program was the clinic in the castle town, first located at Kasahara Hakuō's own house and later in a building provided by the domain. This pathway explores the use of space inside the latter version of Fukui's vaccination clinic. Because vaccination was a strictly sequential process, the spatial layout channeled the movements of both doctors and children (who were being led by their caregivers) so that their bodies would be at the same place at exactly the right time.
